When you’re a repressed housewife in the 1950s and say you put your blood, sweat, and tears into crafting the perfect birthday cake, you mean actual, wet, depressing, Julianne Moore made tears. Because nothing carries the full weight of domestic oppression like having to bake a cake for the husband you don’t want to sleep with. Only after planting one on Toni Collette’s lips could Moore’s Laura Brown get to really baking, a queer liberation worthy of Mary Berry. May the shaky cursive and sexless embrace of this confection remind you how far we’ve come.  And don’t worry about your makeup, you look pretty when you cry.
