The Boston Lagoon’s Lesbian Swan Pair Ornament Raffle Ticket

Handmade by Ash Ariel

$10.00

In 2005, when the iconic Boston Public Garden swans turned out to be two females, they were instantly vaulted into the limelight as the unofficial animal mascots of Massachusetts’ brand-new gay-marriage era. Human lesbians in the Commonwealth had been quietly and competently holding the place together for generations, of course—but apparently it took a pair of cloaca-kissers in a fetid pond to make anyone pay attention. They were, without exaggeration, the first Bay State sapphics of any species that anyone gave a shit about. They flapped so that Rachel Maddow could fly.
