Miss Havisham’s Cake from Great Expectations Ornament Raffle Ticket
Handmade by Kate Harnett
Queers have always been collectors, cleaving to lost relics of beauty, expressions from days long gone, to endure a world of repressed feeling and standardized tradition. We prize decay; we collect abandonment. And there is no greater effigy of rot than Miss Havisham, a jilted bride who won’t take off her wedding dress, clinging to her victim narrative as she manipulates others. The tables were set for her wedding, but all these years later, they’ve yet to be cleared. Her cake, loaded with spiderwebs, mold and regret, is a totem of delusion. Its adornment on your tree (or your own wedding tablescape) is a testament to your devotion: your heroic refusal to move on, to act normal. May its spiders inhabit your home forever.
