Los Angeles is always in the process of ending. A perennial apocalypse. And for all the flakey allegations flung at LA, its consistency in having one foot in the other side is its true power. Take that, New York! And no one knew this better than David Lynch, the maestro of Southern California, who could access the liminal charm of this haunted city with any given drag of a cigarette. When he left us earlier this year, shortly after the biblical wildfires ravaged the city for a week, it felt like LA—nearly hollowed out by climate and pandemic fatigue, industry collapse—may actually cross over the finish line into doom. Thankfully, David promised us Club Silencio in his absence. A cosmic balance of Heaven and Hell that will keep LA going until the Big One swallows us whole. A movie theater in downtown LA where you and your career nemesis/lesbian lover can grip each other in convulsive horror and wonder at the divine agony of Rebekah Del Rio, the only person on Earth who could best Roy Orbison’s pained romance. Club Silencio is the promise of LA.
