Baroque Theatrical Depiction of Gay Hell Ornament Raffle Ticket
Handmade by Alex McCargar
Baroque opera brings thoughts of elegant gestures, idyllic locations, and twisted love stories resolving in happy climaxes. But audiences, attempting to escape their achingly heteronormative lives, also craved being transported to hell, where they might find an oblivious Orpheus attempting to rescue “his” Eurydice, who in some versions of the story was happier in the underworld with her Furie friends. In a society where showing an ankle could ruin one’s reputation, Hell scenes provided a welcome respite from the grand halls and geometric gardens in which most other acts took place. In a subversive little twist, this ornament offers a gay take on those well-trodden halls of hell: a steam-filled sauna where everyone you’ve ever fucked pretends not to recognize you.
